So about a year ago I posted a review of the book Tigerheart by Peter David... and last week I did a video review for it (for my store's blog) as seen below:

So that little trip to the emergency room is going to cost me $1131.00... this is exactly why I don't go to the doctor. I'm still a bit sick, and now I owe a fuckton of money as well. I don't know how much will be covered if I qualify for a financial assistance program I have to jump through hoops for, but I really can't afford this. Next time I'll just not go... what's the point? Speaking of owing money, I found out yesterday that I only owe another $176.12 to the county and then I'm done and they'll stop garnishing my wages. Finally!

Tomorrow is djinnethGwynne's surgery, and of course I'm worried for her. I really want everything to go smoothly and when all is said and done she'll be able to walk like she should. If I was a praying kind of man I would do so. I'm going to do what I can to help her in the coming months... it's the least I can do.

I've been watching Justice League on DVD thanks to nerveagntEric. Damn good cartoon. Still watching Oz and X-Files. Also watched the season premiers of Heroes (sorry for not waiting Gwynnie...) and Smallville yesterday online. I've been reading the fourth City of Ember book and I started reading the Dexter series.

I'm trying not to think about the 2 disc Iron Man exclusive deal that Target will be selling, because I have to wait for six more days and I am impatient as hell. Needless to say I will be getting up early that day... I'm also trying not to think about the Zune 120 that just came out. I have to wait until next year's tax return for that.

And finally, though I've already said what I needed to say in my last post about the subject, I am including an excerpt from a February 2008 post by a former employee who shall remain anonymous:

To the Creepy Company Owner: Are saturday nights at the ****** household really so boring you watch the live store security cameras to see if the employees are standing around and then phone the store to tell them to look busy? You’re like a second rate perv in some bad Sharon Stone movie from the mid 90’s but without the wit or charm of Alec Baldwin. I know running your own company is Serious Business but bookstores are not brothels and even tho’ you pay us like dime store whores, most customers don’t want us following them around like Hebronite Slaves. I hope you’re disemboweled by a mob of angry moms at an after school Sandra Boynton booksigning.

Couldn't have said it better myself...

So I took a nap after posting yesterday, as I had woken up and gone straight to the hospital without eating and I was a little drained, and woke up around 6:30... when I remembered that the pharmacy closed at 7. I threw on some clothes and got there in time to get my medications: two bottle of pills (less than 20 total) and two inhalers. I will be taking the pills at dinnertime and one inhaler when I wake up and go to sleep, the other as needed. So far I'm feeling a lot better. I've barely coughed since last night, and when I do I'm able to breathe fine afterward. I have hope that I'll be all better by next week.

I watched "Rent" (the day after the last showing of the musical!) and had dinner with djinnethGwynne last night, then read the entire first book of the City of Ember series. Looking forward to the movie in October.

Today I'm going to take it easy and just concentrate on getting better... maybe do some housework. Tomorrow is [livejournal.com profile] inked_books at the new time of 6:30 PM. I hope someone actually shows up this time...

  • I've been sick for the past week... I have a chest cold that isn't serious enough to stay home from work but is bad enough to be very annoying. At least I have today off of work.

  • Barack Obama's speech was simply awesome. This guy is going to win, I just know it. If so, the future could be something to look forward to for a change

  • Happy birthday mc chris! Go robot, it's your birthday...

  • Google is releasing a new web browser today. Firefox, thou days art numbered...

  • The Dr. Horrible soundtrack is finally available on iTunes. The official lyrics can be found here. Of course the soundtrack is already on my hard drive and my Zen, but I'll still get the CD when it comes out.

  • I have been reading the immensely enjoyable Artemis Fowl series. I am now on book four and I am barely able to stop reading to make time for things like work and sleep.

  • I forgot just how fun "Men In Black" is. I also can't believe I forgot/didn't know it was a Marvel Comic (kinda)!

  • "Tropic Thunder" was hilarious. Robert Downey Jr. was perfect. I now want to see "Hamlet 2" and "Burn After Reading"

Laundry is put away. Finished Persepolis... just beautiful. Just watched "Wanted" online, streamed from a website. I enjoyed it, but I assume it would be even better on the big screen. I haven't seen it in the theatre because I've been trying to not spend so much of what I have left in the bank as it's not that much and my hours at Books Inc. will be half of what they are now after this week. However, things just might be looking up...

As I finished watching "Wanted" I looked down at my phone and saw that I had a new voicemail message. I checked it, and to my pleasant surprise discovered that the Longs Drugs that I go to all the time in Town & Country (where Books Inc. is also) called me regarding my application which I had turned in 18 June 2008. I called back, and it looks like I have an interview for Thursday or Friday (I'm supposed to call again tomorrow as the manager was heading out the door). I know I quit Longs after one year in September 2004 because it totally sucked there... but I need the money, and beggars can't be choosers. So wish me luck!

"The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed."
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
3.5) Strikethrough those that you tried to read, but couldn't finish out of boredom or frustration.

my list... )

Ha! 8! Take that The Big Read. (And it's actually 14 since The Harry Potter series counts as 7 books...)

I just finished Tigerheart from Peter David, which I started about two months ago. Here is what I had to say about it in the forum:

"A delightful journey into an alternative Neverland with all the humor and adventure you'd expect from a Peter David novel. An absolute joy to read... I highly recommend it to anybody wanting a great story, whether they're young or young at heart!"

The book comes out today. Go buy it, either on Amazon or, even better, from me and my store!

(x-posted to [livejournal.com profile] inked_books)

Today was the first meeting of Inked Books. I think it went really well. Those in attendance included:We introduced ourselves, talked about this month's book (Watchmen by Alan Moore), and generally geeked out for two full hours before going our separate ways.

Next month (14 May) the book we plan to discuss is Strangers In Paradise by Terry Moore. This time I plan to have snacks and drinks.

So today at 4 PM I will be leading my first ever book club at Books Inc. in Palo Alto. It happens to be a graphic novel book club (big surprise) called Inked Books. We will be discussing Alan Moore's Watchmen.

As of this point I haven't finished the book, although I know who killed The Comedian at least. I think I will be going in early and try to read the rest of the book before, you know, leading a group about it.

Here's a link to the Inked Books page on Facebook.

So today I really started in on moving out procedures. Made a few calls and emailed some people regarding their ads on Craigslist, which felt good. I got a hold of one guy who had a place literally within walking distance of here, but it turned out their roommate is staying after all. Anyway, I also started packing CDs and some books, plus threw some stuff away and did some laundry. I just need to keep doing this until I'm ready to move out, which is going to be happening sooner and sooner.

Before all of that I watched "SubUrbia", which was pretty good. It actually was responsible for getting me to get my ass in gear regarding the move... and it had Giovanni Ribisi (whose naked ass I could have done without seeing) and whom I was just talking about last night while at dinner with djinnethGwynne, angry_wolfCarl, and grendelsmRudy. The guys and I ended up watching South Park episodes ("Beefcaaake!"), which was fun, then Gwynne and I watched "Super Troopers" because we wanted to see the opening scene and decided to just keep watching because it's always so damned funny. According to IMDb there's going to be a sequel, but it's not due out until 2010. {sigh}

I woke up with my lower back really hurting. It was hurting a bit last night too, but today it was worse. It's seemed to have gotten better as the day has gone by though.

In work news I'm trying to mentally get ready for my first Inked Books meeting which is in just a little over a week from now. I haven't actually finished Watchmen, so I really need to do that this week. I also have never been to a book club meeting before, so I'll be winging it, but I'm sure it will all work out. At least for the next 4 meetings I'll have co-moderators to help me. Woot!

Also, OREOs with strawberry milkshake creme are frakkin' tasty, yo. So are Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos . Fufu Berry Jones soda is just okay.

Been a few days or so since I posted. It's been pretty much the same old stuff. I've been working, and I am in fact getting more hours now, though I took today off due to my stomach persistently feeling unwell. Watched two movies at the theatre: "Jumper" and "The Spiderwick Chronicles", both of which I have enjoyed. Been watching Angel and Buffy episodes... in fact just in the last week I've gone through the entire first season of Angel. Also watched the Knight Rider pilot movie, which was fun. Looking very much forward to both WonderCon and the Jonathan Coulton concert this weekend with djinnethGwynne. I would like to find the time to read Bad Twin, the Lost novel.

That's it for now...

Updated my resume. Waiting for djinnethGwynne to check it and give me her thoughts. Sent a copy of what I had updated to a book store looking for a receiver... crossing fingers.

Also, I have done two loads of laundry so far, with a third about to be started, and I'm going to see if the dishes wouldn't mind getting tackled. In relaxation news for today I have watched a South Park episode, The Colbert Report, and started reading Colbert's new book (which is darned funny). I would totally vote for him for president. Hmmm... checking out the qualifications... I'll be turning 35 this year - maybe I should run for president myself? At least I'd be employed for four years (unless I get impeached or assassinated... or both).

Just finished.

Wow. So good.

Thank you, J.K. Rowling.

It was great... around 12:30 this morning we got our copies. The Hillsdale B&N moved through the lines very quickly, and the staff seemed happy to have everyone there. Anyway we got the books and left immediately, got home, and I started reading.

Seven chapters down...

Great stuff so far. Fun and a few surprises, If only I didn't have to work today, I would totally finish the book by this evening.

In 24 hours or so I will own a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

To paraphrase a friend of mine: anyone who spoils the ending or any part of this book will meet with an untimely demise. Ya'll have been warned.

Oh, I just have to:

And one more:
