Wow. The last time I posted in this damned thing was the end of March. I had just found a place in San Mateo, was still working at Calafia, there were still new eps of Lost to be seen, and MC Frontalot had yet to tour.

Five months later...

I lost my job at Calafia, but I found a new one at a KFC in Mountain View. I have been kicked out of the place in San Mateo because the person who owns the house found out that the guy I was renting from (who in turn was renting from the owner) had a total of six people in the house as opposed to the contractual five. The guy I was renting from had (eventually) given me a week to find a new place to live, then locked me out the next day and tossed my stuff outside the house. I started asking around and soon a coworker let me know about a guy he knew that owns a house in Mountain View that is walking distance from work (no more paying for monthly transit passes!) and a variety of places it's nice to be near such as Target and Rasputin. The rent is less expensive, I'll have cable with DVR, and a new working computer with internet access (Amy's laptop had died in the last five months)... all vast improvements over where I was a even few weeks ago. With help from friends and a coworker I moved my stuff from the old place to the new one's garage today after work. In one week I get to move in. I can't wait!

Damn, it's been awhile...

Let's see... I have to move again due to my letting my temper get the best of me in regards to dealing with my impatient roommate. I had the room all situated, too... posters up, books on shelves etc. Still working at Calafia... getting about 30 hours a week, so that's good (though I'd still like more). I had a blast at djinnethGwynne's birthday party the other night (there's a pic below of angry_wolfCarl, davebydesignDave, and I). Looking very forward to Wondercon 2010 in a few weeks. Love MC Frontalot's new album Zero Day. Been enjoying my usual shows thanks to having cable. Oh, and there's this...

Here you are at last
To bring my cold lonely soul sweet release
From my weary past
Always searching, the one missing piece was you
And I beg you, come away with me
And together we will find a place to call our own
I can’t wait to see what I can do
With a laptop like you

So after not having a computer since before I had to move from San Bruno I finally have a laptop, courtesy of spdrwnAmy... thanks Amy! It's a shiny black and silver HP Pavilion dv2000 and it's already covered with my geekiest stickers. I heart it!

And here's the pic I mentioned above: )

I have been emailing people via Craigslist ads regarding rooms for rent. I've looked at a few but I am apparently not getting one in Palo Alto that would have been perfect, however I am still looking. In fact, I have an appointment tomorrow in Burlingame to look at a room. I am working five days a week at Calafia, which is nice... I could use the extra hours. Meanwhile, I have been watching the following either live, streaming, or on DVD: Caprica, Lost (awesome start to this last season!), Spartacus: Blood & Sand, The Big Bang Theory (halfway through season 3), & Heroes (season finale next Monday). I am very much looking forward to a free screening of "Serenity" at Google on the 11th and the MC Frontalot concert on the 15th.

Not a whole lot to say... well...

Still working at Calafia, getting more hours there than before but not enough to live on. Keeping my eyes out for an additional job. I've saved a ton of money over Eksmas and since, but I need more income on a monthly basis before I move into my own place again.

I've been playing Batman: Arkham Asylum on moonwhispersBrian's PS3 and I've been loving it. Have watched some movies with angry_wolfCarl recently that include "Book of Eli" (liked it) and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (loved it). Looking forward to the MC Frontalot concert on 15 February and Wondercon 2010 at the beginning of April, not to mention the returns of Lost, V, and the premier of Caprica. Also, I've decided that I need to get out more with friends and DO stuff. I need more of a life than what I've got going on now. For instance, I really liked a recent dinner at spideyjKanane's house, where I met some funny and cool people plus learned of the awesomeness that is The Big Bang Theory. I have enjoyed my Wednesday night comic book store geekout sessions with a friend/former coworker and the regular customers I know from having worked there. I have not, however, been enjoying the rain and cold as walking in or waiting for the bus in said elements are of teh suck. I did like what I saw yesterday after the rain:

Been a couple weeks since I posted. Not much is going on other than working my two jobs (Macy's and Calafia). Between the two I get plenty of hours... in fact I am working the next ten days in a row. I get Eksmas eve, day, and the day after off to recuperate.

For my birthday (on the 7th) I got two t-shirts from my longtime friend Kathryn and an e-giftcard from spdrwnAmy. Thanks ladies! I also had a nice birthday dinner with friends: angry_wolfCarl, moonwhispersBrian , davebydesignDave, spideyjKanane, and zackerysperdutoZack. We went to Chili's, and lo there is a picture below...

I've been working at Calafia and Macy's, and that's going well. I've been managing to get a few hours extra here and there. Should be getting my first paychecks from both places at the end of this week. I am so very glad to be working again!

Looking forward to seeing "The Road" later today. If it's anywhere as good as "No Country For Old Men" I'll be happy. Last night I saw my first Buster Keaton movie, "The General". Even though it was made in the 1920's it looked like it was made yesterday which is no real surprise as Carl and I watched it on Blu-Ray. And he was right as usual... I loved it.

I don't have anything planned for Thanksgiving, which is fine. I don't really see the point of making a big deal of a holiday where the primary focus is eating until your stomach explodes and you fall into a deep food coma. Yay tryptophan! I know the real focus is family, but I don't have any living close enough. Wake me when it's Eksmas!

It is almost 6 AM as I type this on a bus stop bench in San Bruno. I am awake this early so I can get to Palo Alto by 9, though I may be able to start at 8 instead. I worked yesterday at Calafia (at 7 AM believe it or not) and then had training at Macy's. I have orientation at the latter tomorrow evening, then I start truly working on Monday. I love that I can access my shifts online, even able to trade shifts if necessary.

Meh... that's it for now.
brandeks: (Default)
So I talked to Charlie Ayers on Friday, and have become re-employed at Calafia. I will be doing odds and ends, helping out where needed, at my last rate of pay. I did indeed have my interview at Macy's also on Friday, and apparently the young woman who interviewed me liked me enough that she had me interview with someone else today, and... I fill out paperwork tomorrow afternoon! Yes, I got two jobs within a few days of each other. I am quite happy with this. As far as a place to sleep, I talked with some InnVision staff on Friday at Charlie's behest, but then after staying a few days at Brian's I am (at least for now) staying with Carl and his family. I am going to keep looking for something more permanent, but at least I am off the streets.

Oh, and last night it was great to hang out with friends, eat a super tasty dinner and dessert, and play probably my favorite game Apples to Apples. Today I got to watch Stargate Universe and later tonight I will watch Heroes. I will try hard not to think about the fact that "Star Trek" is being released on DVD tomorrow and that the Target version has a model of the Enterprise that comes with it.

Last night I lost my job at Calafia.

Today I lost my job at Books Inc.

Worst. 24 hours. Ever.

I just realized that the last few posts were about stuff other than what is going on with me personally, so here we go...

First of all, my back has seriously been killing me the last 3 or 4 days. No matter how many pain pills I take it still hurts. I must have tweaked it pretty bad recently.

Still could be getting more hours at workplaces, but I am trying to not spend as much money as I'd like to. I'm getting better at closing the Calafia market IMHO, which is helping with co-worker relationships. The only real difficult thing is not constantly eating all the desserts we carry.

Yesterday was spent partly at Tanforan, where I read some graphic novels that had come out recently. After that I did a little bit of shopping at Target, but when I got home I realized that though I had just got some bread, I didn't have peanut butter. {Sigh} I waited for angry_wolfCarl to show up, and we watched some more episodes of Venture Bros., which is quickly turning into one of my new favorite shows. When that was over we were hungry and decided to eat at Melaka, a place up San Bruno Avenue (where Lyon's used to be) which was pretty good for being buffet. On my way home I stopped at three different mini-marts trying to get a tube of Werther's, to no avail, but I did purchase a Pepsi-Cola Throwback... which contains natural sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. I had to try it, and it was good, but the caffeine kept me awake long enough to enjoy "Special" and "Timecrimes" (see my last post). The problem with Throwback is it's only out for a limited time, so I'm really looking forward to trying Pepsi Natural. Anyway, finally I went to sleep.

Woke up and tried for awhile in vain to watch the latest ep of Lost, cleverly entitled Some Like It Hoth, and which I finally saw and enjoyed quite alot. Now I'm just relaxing for a bit before I get ready to go to work at the bookstore later tonight.

Oh, and the new Harry Potter 6 trailer is full of win! Also, tickets are now available for the midnight showings of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" on Thursday night/Friday morning 30 April/1 May. I'll be seeing it at Tanforan (of course)... who's with me?

For those of you who were wondering what the market looks like:

We have a variety of pastries:

brandeks: (Heroes)
I have today off, as I did yesterday, and was able to watch the latest Heroes episode. Even if Heroes hasn't been as good as it was in the first season (so people say) this episode seemed to be a huge exception to that... it was perfect. Same with the latest Dollhouse episode. The five episodes before it were just the warm-up for the good stuff. In other media news, I finally watched "Kung Fu Panda", and I have to say I seriously underestimated how good it was. Loved it. Same with "No Country For Old Men". I know it seems like I like everything I see, but that's not always the case... I just happen to be lucky enough to watch things that I like. Maybe it's partly that I don't over analyze what I watch and instead just allow myself to enjoy it. I also recently saw "Crash", which I'm not sure I liked as much as everything else, but at least it had nudity and car crashes.

Money is a little tight, but I think I will be able to pay rent and still be able to eat. One of my jobs cut a day from my schedule (which was very late being put up by the way), so I'm a little worried, but I was also told that it was temporary. I sure hope so... it would suck if I was working two jobs and still couldn't afford rent and food.

I have found that I enjoy doing laundry and cleaning my room (to an extent). Once it's all done, and I can look around and know that everything is clean and put away where it's supposed to go, I just feel better. I need to get a few things still for the room... for instance I have a mattress coming to me if I can arrange to pick it up. I appreciate the futon I was given, but I wake up with a stiff neck because of the way I have to sleep on it. I also need a computer desk and chair, plus a bookcase. I should really put some stuff up on the walls too.

Update 2:43 PM - So I just had to add here that "There Will Be Blood" is seriously a great movie. I regret not having seen it sooner. "I drink your milkshake" indeed!

  • Today I slept in as late as I could, watched the latest Lost episode, napped, and finally went out and did laundry. Tonight I plan to watch "There Will Be Blood" as well as some eps of Wonder Showzen, which I bought myself on sale today when I went to Tanforan... been wanting them for quite awhile, so this makes me quite happy. I also got myself a rolling cart for laundry and groceries. All in all I did my part to help boost the economy today!

  • My boss at Calafia has taken to calling me Zorn. He said it's because he knows I'm a sci-fi loving guy, and therefore I am now Zorn, because it's a sci-fi sounding name. I asked him what I should call him, and he said Commander Cody. Anyway, I really like working for Charlie... I must buy his book Food 2.0 at some point.

  • Tomorrow will be extra geektastic as angry_wolfCarl and I will be meeting up for "Watchmen" in IMAX goodness at the Metreon (for reals this time), and then heading back to his place for the 2 hour season finale of BSG.

  • On a personal but vague note, I find it difficult to accept certain things in regards to a certain someone. I was half joking when I texted this person last night, but perhaps it was tinged with more than half of the bitterness I intended. In any case I think not communicating with this person for a little while might be for the best, at least until I can sort things out with my feelings.

Got my first paycheck from Calafia yesterday. Work schedules have been synchronized nicely... I get about 21 hours from Calafia and 17 from Books Inc. Right now I have Mondays and Wednesdays off. I've been enjoying working at the market, and have even been eating healthier because of it. Money has been tight, but I anticipate I'll actually be able to get some real groceries (beyond milk, cereal, and bread) and maybe even spend a little frivolously again when I get my check from Books Inc. on the 15th. Speaking of money, I gave the landlord the rent check finally, and he didn't seem too upset. I assured him that next month there shouldn't be any problems as I have three checks coming between now and the first.

Absolutely loved "Watchmen". I must see it again, at least on a regular screen, if not IMAX. The opening title sequence over the credits is amazing. I will be owning this the day it comes out on DVD when it is the director's cut with the animated parts and other deleted scenes edited back in.

    More to come later...
    brandeks: (south park eks)
    • I got to see moonwhispersBrian and duskwalker666Rainah tonight, though I wish it were under better circumstances... she's moving away. That makes me sad. But it's for the best I suppose. At least I got to have dinner at Chili's and watch Dr. Horrible with them and zackerysperdutoZack before heading home, which was fun.

    • Later today, at 10 AM, I start my first actual day of work at Calafia's market. I am excited! I then work the next few days.

    • I now have tickets for all three days of Wondercon and for the midnight showing of "Watchmen" at Tanforan. Woot!

    • I talked to my housemate about the internet deal and how I'm only able to be online half the time, so from April onward I will pay him just $10 a month... he said I don't need to pay for March since the $20 I paid this month will cover two months at the new price. I still might just get my own cable internet subscription at some point in the near future.
    brandeks: (biohazard)
The bad: So I am still a bit sick, the rain isn't helping (water inside shoes is bad), had to take the bus since the train would have made me late to work, and I am working two shifts back to back... Books Inc. then my last day of training at Calafia.

The good: I got myself a Coldbuster Jamba Juice, and found out that their oatmeal is just a dollar today, plus double shifts means double the money. Oh, and "Choke" was awesome.

    That's all for now.

Update 4:30 PM - Training at Calafia was canceled. So I get to go home and recuperate tonight and all day tomorrow, then I work the next three days, and then have the following three days off for Wondercon! I also found out that they are willing to give me 40 hours at Calafia, so I am thinking of giving my two weeks at Books Inc. I don't really want to, since I like working at the bookstore and all, but I just don't see how I can work both jobs and keep my sanity. Oh, and for the record, I highly recommend the Queen Calafia burger... so tasty!
    brandeks: (joss)
After watching the first two episodes of Dollhouse on Hulu, I feel like Buffy, Angel, and Firefly were just warmups for the real thing: this.

At least if I had to stay home sick from work today I had something good to watch... and I also have "Choke" from Netflix waiting on top of my t.v. And speaking of t.v., another good ep of BSG last night. "How many dead chicks are out there?" Heh heh.

Got my work schedule from Calafia last night... let's just say my worries about not having enough hours are over. In fact, I may have to ask for less. I am really hoping they will do something about the fact that I'm scheduled next weekend, since I plan on attending Wondercon then.

Update 4:08 PM - "We're not going to Guam, are we?"

Just finished watching six episodes of Lost in a row... now I am all caught up! I even wore my numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42) t-shirt during part of the mini-marathon. This season is so good... I like that it isn't really flashbacks anymore... instead it's mostly taking place in the present (more or less) with time traveling instead. Very interesting twists and stuff. Old questions answered, new ones asked. Loving it!
    brandeks: (south park eks)
    • Working a double shift today (like I did on Wednesday)... Calafia and Books Inc. back to back. That's fine with me... I could use the hours. Then tonight is BSG with the usual suspects. Woot!

    • I have watched "Towelhead", "Cashback", and "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist" in the past week via Netflix. All three were good, but "Towelhead" really stands out as just a fantastic film.

    • I used my day off yesterday to clean my room (including vacuuming), do two loads of laundry, and take out the trash. Go domestic me! I realised just now that I have lived at my new place for just over a month now... and I am feeling pretty good about that.

    • Finally, I have learned that the Jonathan Coulton 22 February 2008 concert DVD/CD set is coming very soon!
