Not a whole lot to say... well...

Still working at Calafia, getting more hours there than before but not enough to live on. Keeping my eyes out for an additional job. I've saved a ton of money over Eksmas and since, but I need more income on a monthly basis before I move into my own place again.

I've been playing Batman: Arkham Asylum on moonwhispersBrian's PS3 and I've been loving it. Have watched some movies with angry_wolfCarl recently that include "Book of Eli" (liked it) and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (loved it). Looking forward to the MC Frontalot concert on 15 February and Wondercon 2010 at the beginning of April, not to mention the returns of Lost, V, and the premier of Caprica. Also, I've decided that I need to get out more with friends and DO stuff. I need more of a life than what I've got going on now. For instance, I really liked a recent dinner at spideyjKanane's house, where I met some funny and cool people plus learned of the awesomeness that is The Big Bang Theory. I have enjoyed my Wednesday night comic book store geekout sessions with a friend/former coworker and the regular customers I know from having worked there. I have not, however, been enjoying the rain and cold as walking in or waiting for the bus in said elements are of teh suck. I did like what I saw yesterday after the rain:

A little over an hour to go!

in line for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"...

In the theater... a fellow geek lent me their Wolverine hand which they had obtained from Lee's Comics:

Goddamnit, these pics are a lot darker than they looked on my Centro... oh well.

The owner of Comic Relief, Rory D. Root, passed away recently from hernia complications at the age of 50.

Worst. News. Ever...

I hope Lee Hester of Lee's Comics won't mind if I link a post he made about Rory here. It was very moving. Also, here's a nice article from The Comics Reporter.
brandeks: (birthday)
Today and tomorrow are the birthdays of two of my former Lee's Comics co-workers...

So for today: happy birthday, ghostyureiRich!

And for tomorrow: happy birthday, spider_goldM.P.!

I hope you guys have good ones...

Wow... it's been a week since I last posted. I suppose with having to move and all I haven't had a good chance to post. So here we go: )

Gah... hungry. I may need to venture out of the house for a bit and find some food.
brandeks: (geek inside)
Today was a very geektastic day:
  • I started off talking to a former coworker of mine, spider_goldM.P., about upcoming comic related movies and generally geeking out

  • I got dressed, wearing my "this is my secret identity" t-shirt with my Spider-Man club shirt over it, plus my Autobot symbol hat

  • After watching a trailer for "The Incredible Hulk" (among others) I saw "Superhero Movie" with djinnethGwynne, and it was actually much funnier than I thought it would be. Seriously... the audience was laughing pretty hard throughout the movie and even applauded at the end

  • From there Gwynne drove me to 7-11 so I could get an Iron Man head Slurpee cup filled with tastiness

  • Then it was off to Lee's so I could get my comics and geek out more with another former co-worker, thehulkisnotredAndrew

  • Finally I got home, and after reading the comics I bought, I watched an episode of Smallville

  • If that's not enough there's a couple of Battlestar Galactica specials on SciFi tonight that I plan on watching
brandeks: (Default)
Went out today and stopped by Lee's to pick up comics and get Wondercon tickets. Good thing I just got my tax return. Anyway, read a few of the comics at Taxi's while I ate lunch, then rode the bus from teenager hell back to Redwood City and got myself home. I ended up watching the season finale of Flash Gordon, the second episode of Eli Stone, and two BtVS episodes (we left off with this one). Also had yummy pork chops thanks to Gwynnie applying heat to a pan and stuff.

Well, gotta be at work at 9 AM so it's time for bed!

I worked yesterday, and it was good. The day went by fairly quickly and then it was time for djinnethGwynne to pick me up for dinner.

We decided to try a Thai place called Ka Ra Kade that was very near where we live... though we were apprehensive. We'd gone to that location before, and the experience wasn't a good one, but the restaurant looked like it was under new ownership now. We were pleasantly surprised at the redesign, but even moreso when we got our food. For instance we ordered satay as an appetizer, and whereas the last time it was bland and the peanut sauce wasn't good at all, this time both were super tasty. I liked their garlic pepper chicken, but Gwynne's pad see-ew was just scrumptious. The waiter was attentive (but it was just us and two other people in the place) and the owner (I believe) was very friendly, chatting us up while we ate. It was a very nice dining experience and we'll surely be going there again. Check out the third paragraph in Gwynnie's LJ entry here for her take on the place.

Anyway, when we got home (all nice and full) I checked the mail and discovered a check from Sharper Image. I excitedly opened it to discover it was for the amount of...

... thirty-four cents.

Yes, they spent forty-one cents to sent me a check I'd actually feel embarrassed to cash if I walked into WaMu with it. Anyway, after calling the assistant manager of SI and having a good laugh with him about it I settled in and watched Smallville and Lost (which I reviewed here) while also using the electric kettle to heat up her royal flyness' bathwater because I am a loving boyfriend type person. Then, when she went to bed I stayed up until 2 AM reading up on Lost and getting into the online experience.

I woke up this morning (well, just a little bit ago actually) to Selene pawing at the blanket right near my face in an effort to burrow under there right next me. It was very cute. That last about five minutes before I got up and did my usual morning routine, which resulted in this post. I have the day off, and I may go to Lee's to pick up some comics... I dunno.

I had a really nice day today with djinnethGwynne. We slept in (myself more than she), then after putting some laundry in we eventually left the house to search for food. We went to Red Robin for lunch (as you can see in the following photos taken on my Centro):

... which left us totally stuffed, then we stopped in Toys R Us for a bit before our shopping trip at Target. From there we drove to Lee's Comics so I could chip away just a little at what I have on hold (I stuck to my personal set limit which I feel good about), pick up my W-2, and get a few other items. After a unproductive stop at Walgreen's we dropped into Baskin Robbins for shakes (mmm... peanut butter chocolate!) and then it was time for a gas stop run before heading home. I think we might watch some Buffy and/or a movie tonight.

In the last week or so I have:
  • Met Joe Montana on Monday and saw Dwight Clark yesterday, both at Sharper Image. Geeked out with Joe and shook his hand.

  • Had a very nice birthday dinner with my friends at Max's Opera Cafe. Thank you to everyone who was there!

  • Watched more 2nd season Buffy episodes. Angel has lost his soul after doing the nasty with Buffy, and now he's like a typical guy who finally "gets some"... only worse.

  • Improved my RSG % at SI, making my boss happy. Also signing up a lot of cards, which makes my wallet happier.

  • Got my comic books from Lee's (as much as I could without spending more than $50. I dunno... I think I need to stop collecting at least some of these titles.
Not a bad week!
brandeks: (job hunt)
Sharper Image called. I now have two jobs. SI said they can give me 40 hours a week in December. I start Friday at 10 AM.

Tonight I will be doing that book preview thing in S.F. for Books Inc., then training on the 15th, and my first regular day there on the 16th.

Sorry, Brookstone... I am very much spoken for.

Update 3:55 PM - I decided to call Mark, the manager at Lee's, and let him know the good news. We had a nice talk... got something confirmed. I'm going to continue shopping there (although not the Mountain View store, just San Mateo). Good times.
brandeks: (job hunt)
So I went down to Stanford Shopping Center and went into my new place of employment, Books Inc. I filled out some paperwork, copied the schedule, and it was all good - except at one point I saw a certain name on something up on the wall: niveK's. I asked the manager about him, and she assured me that he was let go due to "issues with him". That made me feel a little better. For those of you who don't know, niveK was the guy who wrote those letters to Lee's when I first got hired and then again a year later.

djinnethGwynne just pulled up... gotta go for now!

Update 8:23 PM: Mmmm... sushi. The deep fried Philly roll was insane! Damn, I am stuffed...

So, where was I? Oh yeah. niveK was the guy who tried to get me fired. Anyway, I left the store, went to Brookstone and had my interview there, then swung by Sharper Image to let them know that I had gotten a job. The manager heard what I had to say, then asked how much I was making... and told me that I'd be making a dollar more an hour plus the commission, and he could give me 40 hours a week. He said he just had to talk to Mark at Lee's (tomorrow morning) and it should be a done deal. So it looks like I could be making a fuckton of money this holiday season if I play my cards right. At any rate, I go into the city tomorrow evening for a preview of books coming out and apparently some free books that they give us, all on the clock. And to top it off, thanks to Books Inc. I have passes to see "Lions For Lambs" and "August Rush"... I guess bookstores get movie passes just like comic book stores do!

You know what the definition of suck is? How about looking forward to a day off of work, like every other week, only to discover that you're scheduled today.

I suppose I should feel lucky that I'm employed, right?
brandeks: (south park eks)
  • I feel like my life is chaotic right now... I look around the den, where I type this, and it's like a physical representation of my life with everything all strewn about, out of place. I suppose there will be a time when I'll have more order, but right now I'm pretty stressed out.

  • The cold or whatever I had is all but a very tiny bit gone. I'd say I'm at 98%.

  • I am working six days next week, as a co-worker is leaving the company after Sunday. In other work news the owner has requested I take pictures of the staff for the website... maybe now I'll be listed on the site among my co-workers... I mean, it's only been over a year that I've worked there.

  • There's a guy hammering on the hood of the car next door... quite annoying. Figures it's on my day off. At least I'm not trying to sleep.

  • I'm looking forward to the Kid Beyond concert tonight. It will be the first time I have seen him. Can't wait!

  • I can't believe I've seen "Spider-Man 3" only once... I want to go see it on IMAX this weekend or something.

  • Selene and Biko are the cutest kitties in the world when they're all cuddled up to each other )

Can they get any cuter?! Yes, they can... )
brandeks: (comic book guy)
Just a reminder that today is:

Come get your free comics (limit two per customer, four with ad) from Lee's Comics at either one of our San Mateo and Mountain View locations. We're also having a storewide sale... 10% - 50% off! We are also giving away Batman and Star Wars Heroclix figures this year.

We'll be open today from 10 AM - 9 PM, so hopefully we'll see you there!
brandeks: (comic book guy)
I ended up working for quite awhile by myself today for the first time. Had a few problems, but I got through them relatively unscathed. The big sale of the day was a $600 Alex Ross painting... that should make Lee happy! Also got my first paycheck today (woot!), as well as a comped ticket to Wondercon, which I plan to attend next Friday. I also got a Lee's Comics tote bag which I was told asked nicely to use for swag and stuff while walking around the con, as well as a ton of bumper stickers I'll be handing out.

Anyway, hungry now... must go eat!
brandeks: (comic book guy)
After a restless night of sleep, I woke early, feeling very tired. I had been asked yesterday to come in today at 10 AM for just a few minutes to talk about something with the GM, which I agreed to do. I lay in bed, my mind racing about the possiblity of doing a website revamp, possibly a LJ community as well for Lee's. By 9 AM I couldn't stay in bed any longer, and I walked over to the store. The GM was suprised to see me there an hour early, but went ahead and told me what he wanted to talk to me about. I'm not supposed to talk about it with anyone, but... well, let's just say some people are sore losers. Emphasis on loser. The result was that everything is okay, but now there's this thing about me that the staff knows that would have been bad if it wasn't for the source and my being given the opportunity to explain it all. Anyway... after that was done with I mentioned the website thing, and he said that it was a good idea, but to wait for awhile and then talk with Lee about it, so that's my plan. Anyway, at 9:30 AM I was going to go, but the GM asked if I wouldn't mind staying until 1 PM on the clock... and I agreed. Today is new comics day, so it was fairly busy, and I got to have a bit extra training. So at 1 I left, got home, called Gwynne, and had some lunch. Now I'm just waiting for her to come home and pick me up... it's time for the car radio part 2!

Also, to those of you who are going to Wondercon, I'll be working there all day on Saturday! Come by the Lee's table and say hi!
