my geekcase and moving stuff...

I used to use the bookcase in this pic for DVDs, but since they are all in binders now I decided to showcase my geektastic interests. Everything from Spidey to BSG to The Matrix in one place. Yes, that's my Jayne hat on top of the lightning ball. On the bottom are my mass markets... many are novelizations of movies.

Anyway, the room is really coming together thanks to the awesome efforts last night of Carl and Rudy. I can't thank them enough, nor Darcy for providing me with a futon. Today my back is hurting badly from the moving... I shudder to think what it would feel like if I was still sleeping on the floor. I also should thank Gwynne for packing some more of my stuff and having it ready to pick up. Thanks again you four!

It's a Brand New Day for the United States of America and Spider-Man's along for the ride!

To celebrate the upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama, Marvel is proud to present an all-new story teaming up one of the world's most recognizable political figures with the world's greatest super hero as President-Elect Obama joins Spider-Man in "Spidey Meets the President!"

Written by Zeb Wells with art by Todd Nauck and Frank D'Armata, the story takes place in Washington, D.C. on Inauguration Day and finds one of Spider-Man's oldest foes attempting to thwart the swearing in ceremony of the 44th President of the United States.

available in comic book shops nationwide on January 14th, 2009. Look for the special variant cover by artist Phil Jimenez featuring the President-Elect and Spider-Man!

"When we heard that President-Elect Obama is a collector of Spider-Man comics, we knew that these two historic figures had to meet in our comics' Marvel Universe," says Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. "Historic moments such as this one can be reflected in our comics because the Marvel Universe is set in the real world. A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man."

the issue.

Best. Marvel team up. Ever.

Update 10 January 2008 / 12:15 PM - I talked with someone at Lee's Comics last night, and found out that getting the cover shown above will be extremely difficult. They aren't getting any, and to even get the issue at all you need to be on a list. If anyone finds the issue with the cover that has Obama on it please buy it for me and I shall pay you back!

This is Eksmas bitches!

o Eksmas tree...

This tree is gorgeous... and in the same room are 11 or so of my friends. Fire in the fireplace. And I'm wearing my new Spider-Man thermal shirt...

It feels really good to be alive.

It seems that in the last few days I haven't actually posted what I thought about "Iron Man"...

... well, having seen it three times in the last four days I would have to say that it is probably the best superhero movie ever. Better even than my own hero's movie, "Spider-Man". Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. have hit one out of the ballpark and into orbit. The right mixture of everything that goes into making a really good movie and then some. Did I mention I saw it thrice? Hell, I'd even see it again if we could get some people together. If you haven't seen it yet be sure to stay through the credits... it's worth it. Oh, and "The Forbidden Kingdom" was pretty good (saw it 22 April but forgot to mention it), "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" are both really hilarious, but not so much "Baby Mama". Yeah... don't bother with that last one.

In other news, I was waiting in line for my second viewing Friday night when I noticed that Cinemark is now charging 50 cents for refills on large popcorn when they used to do so for free. For fun, I decided to tease the manager on duty about it, and after chatting for a bit and telling him that I used to work for Century doing projection among other things he asked if I'd want to work for him! I said yes, but in the excitement of watching the movie I forgot to grab an app on the way out, so I ended up coming back the next night and (eventually) getting one. If everything works out I'll be working the same or less hours at the bookstore and getting the rest of the hours I need at the theatre to cover rent and my other expenses living in Redwood City, with the fringe benefits of my discount at the bookstore and advance screenings of those summer movies I am looking forward to.

Oh yeah... and happy Cinco De Mayo!

Today was a very geektastic day:
  • I started off talking to a former coworker of mine, spider_goldM.P., about upcoming comic related movies and generally geeking out

  • I got dressed, wearing my "this is my secret identity" t-shirt with my Spider-Man club shirt over it, plus my Autobot symbol hat

  • After watching a trailer for "The Incredible Hulk" (among others) I saw "Superhero Movie" with djinnethGwynne, and it was actually much funnier than I thought it would be. Seriously... the audience was laughing pretty hard throughout the movie and even applauded at the end

  • From there Gwynne drove me to 7-11 so I could get an Iron Man head Slurpee cup filled with tastiness

  • Then it was off to Lee's so I could get my comics and geek out more with another former co-worker, thehulkisnotredAndrew

  • Finally I got home, and after reading the comics I bought, I watched an episode of Smallville

  • If that's not enough there's a couple of Battlestar Galactica specials on SciFi tonight that I plan on watching

From an email by Jonathan Coulton:

My apologies if your geographical location makes this email irrelevant, but THIS INFORMATION MUST BE KNOWN: On February 22 I'll be doing a show at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. I'll be accompanied by a crew of video production people who will capture whatever magic happens there, and later, re-assemble it on a DVD that hopefully the entire world will purchase. With any luck, this will also lead to a proper live CD. I'm telling you all this because it's important that the show be fun and special and generally awesome. If you live in San Francisco, I insist you come to this show. If you don't I hope you'll tell your San Francisco friends about it so they come instead. This will be fun! And expensive and terrifying (for me, not you)! Buy your tickets here: Will there be more shows? Yes, somewhere, sometime. Honestly I can't think past the 22nd right now, and a lot of things are still coming together. When stuff gets booked, I will spam you about it. I promise. See you in SF! -j

The cool thing is, it's the same night Wondercon opens, so I'll be in S.F. anyway. I bought tickets for djinnethGwynne and I (one of the seat numbers is the same for "file not found"... heh) at since the other places online were sold out. I think I'll wear my zombie Spider-Man t-shirt that day (o/` all we wanna do is eat your brains o/`).

I can't wait!

Had a nice relaxing day off yesterday, though I wasn't feeling that good. Still not feeling good but I'm going into work today anyway. Too many people have been calling in sick and unless I'm vomiting up my stomach lining I will continue to go in. Anyway, when djinnethGwynne got home we had pizza and watched the first few episodes of BtVS season 6 (geek trio FTW! not to mention the Spider-Man references) and an episode of Good Eats (apples!) before going to sleep.

Oh yeah... watched the first two eps of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles a few nights ago, and I believe Gwynnie and I agree that it is of the good.
brandeks: (job hunt)
Wow. The interview at Sharper Image went so well I am surprised I'm not still there watching a training video. As it is the assistant manager said I pretty much have the job as long as I pass the background check. I'm not sure what will come up on it at this point, but I guess I'll know soon if I'm hired for sure. The interview went over an hour, and to give you an idea of how casual it was, he had me tell him all about Spider-Man's black suit as a way of gaging my people skills. At the end the guy was gushing about how perfect I was, and that my personality screamed management.

Just... wow.

I also dropped off a few apps as I mentioned previously and dropped off a few resumes at other places. Things look pretty good. Updates to come soon.

For the heck of it I thought I'd document the Spider-Man t-shirts that I own.

LJ Cut for your pleasure... )

And that's not even all of them... I own three more:
  • a red version of that fourth shirt

  • a black shirt with a red outlined spider logo

  • a Venom black shirt with white spider logo
Images taken from here and here.

With all the talk of zombies on my friends page, here's my personal contribution:

brandeks: (south park eks)
  • I feel like my life is chaotic right now... I look around the den, where I type this, and it's like a physical representation of my life with everything all strewn about, out of place. I suppose there will be a time when I'll have more order, but right now I'm pretty stressed out.

  • The cold or whatever I had is all but a very tiny bit gone. I'd say I'm at 98%.

  • I am working six days next week, as a co-worker is leaving the company after Sunday. In other work news the owner has requested I take pictures of the staff for the website... maybe now I'll be listed on the site among my co-workers... I mean, it's only been over a year that I've worked there.

  • There's a guy hammering on the hood of the car next door... quite annoying. Figures it's on my day off. At least I'm not trying to sleep.

  • I'm looking forward to the Kid Beyond concert tonight. It will be the first time I have seen him. Can't wait!

  • I can't believe I've seen "Spider-Man 3" only once... I want to go see it on IMAX this weekend or something.

  • Selene and Biko are the cutest kitties in the world when they're all cuddled up to each other )

Can they get any cuter?! Yes, they can... )
brandeks: (south park eks)
  • I had a nice night at home with djinnethGwynne yesternight. She picked me up from work, we got some DQ, then came home and ate pizza while I watched TV (Star Trek Tech and Spider-Man Tech) and she went through some old papers and such. She very nicely cooled me off with a wash cloth later as it was so damned warm and I wasn't feeling well, which brings me to the next bullet...

  • I've had a cold that's been getting progressively worse over the last few days, and today I called in to get the day off for rest and recuperation. I'm guessing my gravelly voice was convincing enough for the manager to get someone else to cover for me. The same manager thought that Gwynne should amputate my lungs... he's kinda strange, that guy.

  • I really don't understand the Spidey 3 hatin'... WTF? oh well... it's been breaking box office records at least. Whatever... I am looking forward to seeing it again, most likely later this week.

  • Once again it is too damned warm out. Bah.

Um... more later perhaps.

3:00 PM - So after leaving the house later than I was planning on I got to the theatre to find myself the first person to inquire about lining up for the show. Talked to a manager and before too long they set up a line on the second floor near the auditorium where the movie will be playing, complete with a bench to sit on... so I am inside and quite comfortable. There's a fountain nearby to refill my water bottle, I have snacks in my bag, and plenty of entertainment while I wait out the next 9 hours. I had one staff guy take a picture of me with the Simpsons movie standee. Currently listening to: MC Frontalot's new album Secrets From The Future.

6:00 PM - Well, it's 6 and I am still the only person in line. I'm feeling kinda silly. Oh well... you live and learn. I think this may be the last time I wait in line for this many hours before a movie starts... we'll see. Every so often I'll get up and walk around, which if nothing else gives me a change of scenery. Listened to a bunch of CDs already; I may post a full list later. Currently listening to: Nine Inch Nails' new album Year Zero.

The Simpsons and I... )

Albums I listened to (for posterity's sake)... )

Update 3:20 AM - I got home a bit ago, and apparently Pocket LJ won't work, but I finally got the above post into Semagic. I was going to mention that djinnethGwynne showed up later wearing her Spidey shirt, and the next two people in line came around 9 PM. They let us all in at 10 PM. So that was nice...

Oh yeah... the movie... I loved it! I honestly think it's the best of the three. I even forgot to eat the candy I brought with me, I was so into the movie. There were a few issues I had, but then I had some issues with the first two movies too. Venom was awesome to see on the big screen, nice cameos by the usual suspects (one got spontaneous applause), and very emotionally charged. Can't wait to see it again!

Update 12:12 PM - I took a pic of Gwynnie in her seat at the theatre last night when we first got into the auditorium... here it is: )
brandeks: (spidey 2)
Having watched "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2.1" last night, I am now ready to go stand in line at the Century 20 here in RWC for the midnight (12:01 actually) showing of "Spider-Man 3". I'll be wearing the club shirt I haven't worn in months due to a tear in the armpit, thanks to djinnethGwynne fixing it last night. Thanks again Gwynnie! Anyway, I'll have some books to read and music to listen to (including the soundtracks for all three movies), not to mention an ongoing LJ post I may write as I stand in line all day ensuring that I (and whoever is with me) get the best seats for what, from what I hear, is the best of the Spidey trilogy. There is no way I'm going to have a repeat of what happened the first time I saw "Spider-Man"... arriving about ten minutes late I had to stand throughout the entire movie in the back of the theatre. Not this time.

12 + hours to go...
brandeks: (nerdcore)
So I haven't posted in a little while... here's the news from the past 5 days or so:

I went to the SiliCon meeting on Sunday. Among other things I was asked to moderate a Spider-Man panel by somebody (no real surprise considering, but still... to be asked? wow!) and was asked by genuine_snarkGeo to manage the putting together of the art show panels. When the meeting was over and I decided there wasn't more to be done there, eliteLouise and I took off to catch a bus to Caltrain to BART and finally got to the Cafe Du Nord in S.F. By the time we got there it was around 7 PM or so and I hadn't eaten all day, but I still stood in line to wait and make sure I was able to get in. Finally in, I was able to get some food and drink, got to know a few people who Louise knew (tyrsalviaAutumn and metaphorgeFox), and generally relax. Frontalot gave me a Certificate of Awesomeness, and I bought a funpack and a t-shirt from his Ma & Pa. Finally the MC Frontalot concert started after MC Lars and Optimus Rhyme finished their sets... and it was a blast. Every song he sang was one I liked, and so fun was had in large amounts. After the show he signed both of the CDs I brought, and the night was over save the praising of the show between djinnethGwynne and I in the car ride home.

Monday night after work I got to have dinner at the wonderful lexigeekAdam and klevermoreKarla's house with Louise. It was quite awesome to see the new episode of Heroes (OMGWTFBBQ) and the 3rd and 4th episodes of Drive (which has apparently been canceled... stupid Fox).

Tuesday I wasn't feeling good after work. Nothing really major happened. Meh.

Last night was a dose of good and bad. I got to hang out with Louise and watch "Grandma's Boy", which was more hilarious than I had thought it would be (anyone who has tested video games and/or has a sense of humor should see it), and so that was of the good. I came home and chatted with angry_wolfCarl, also good. When I went into the bedroom that was when the bad started. I hadn't let Gwynne know where I was, she had thought I'd be home when she got home from class and had been worrying, and the next thing I knew a major argument started between us, and... well, just badness. We went to sleep in a better mood than before the argument, but I really need to find a new place to live ASAP. We can't continue living with each other, and we both know it.

Today I slept in very late, then went with Gwynne to Baker's Square for more talking which was good. We went to Best Buy and got a few things each (I now have the Stephen Lynch CD A Little Bit Special and Gwynne has the Black Snake Moan soundtrack), had a quick stop at 7-11, and came home to listen to our music and sign up for cable.

Update 29 April 2008 / 11:02 PM - I found this video of MC Frontalot performing Goth Girls at Cafe Du Nord that night on You Tube just now:

Spider-Man 2.1 :

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Spiderman 2.1 which includes an all-new extended cut of the film with an extra 8 minutes of footage. The set will be available to own from the 17th April, and should retail at around $19.94. The film will be presented in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. Extras are expected to include an introduction with producers Avi Arad and Grant Curtis, an audio commentary with producer Laura Ziskin and screen-writer Alvin Sargent, a trivia track with new video segments, an "Inside 2.1" featurette on the new cut, visual effects breakdowns, a sneak peek at Spider-Man 3, and more.

I saw the trailer for this on my "Casino Royale" DVD (late birthday present), along with the second "Spider-Man 3" trailer that's been around for awhile. 8 minutes of new footage... I am gonna have to get this, damnit.

And speaking of "Casino Royale", I entered a contest... for a vacation royale. If I win I'm taking djinnethGwynne, people... she deserves a vacation like this more than I do.
